Sunderland’s Jonny Williams admits fears over his injury problem

Jonny Williams scored in Sunderland’s 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough.

Jonny Williams has admitted to the Sunderland’s official website that he feared that he was going to be spending the whole season fighting injury, before he made his return to the Black Cats’ first team at the weekend.

Williams has missed a sizeable chunk of the campaign with injury, and there were fears the the Welsh international could be sidelined for a lot longer.

Williams’ career to date has been blighted with injury, with the play maker rarely able to stay fit for a prolonged period of time.

However, Williams made his return to Sunderland’s first-team on Saturday, and he impressed in a 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough.

The former Crystal Palace man scored Sunderland’s second goal in the contest, with a fine finish at the near post.

And Williams was delighted to be having an impact again, as he feared he could be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “I came here to play as much as I can. I got an unfortunate set back when I needed to get an operation on my shoulder.

“I was gutted at the time because I thought it was going to be another season where I was fighting injuries.

“I’m delighted to get my first goal for the club at a vital time.

“Years of hard work, coming back from injuries and working hard to get back into the team, to have moments like that in front of your home fans, in a big game like that – I’m delighted.”

If Williams can now stay off the treatment table it will be a major boost for Chris Coleman’s side.

The 23-year-old has the potential to be one of Sunderland’s key attacking influences, if he can stay fit.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Aston Villa.
