The Mackems starlet is attracting attention from around the continent.

Scouts from eight of Europe’s most prestigious clubs watched Sunderland’s Joel Asoro in action for Sweden Under-21s on Monday, according to the Chronicle.

The 17-year-old was thrust into senior action by new Mackems boss David Moyes during last month’s derby defeat to Middlesbrough, having impressed in pre-season.

Afterwards, reports of interest from Paris Saint-Germain emerged, and the French champions were not alone in sending a delegation to last night’s under-21 draw with Spain – with representatives of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Lyon, Valencia and Villarreal also said to be present.

Asoro, though, delivered a diplomatic response when quizzed about the heavy scouting turn out.

“I’m not surprised by the fact that many scouts were there to see such a beautiful match,” he told Swedish television network, TV 12.

“I do my job, we’ll see about the rest later on.”

A recent injury to Fabio Borini means Sunderland may have little choice but to deploy Asoro more often between now and January, with Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe the only senior options available to Moyes.

Anichebe only arrived at the Stadium of Light last week, having been without a club since his release by West Bromwich Albion in June.

And the Nigerian’s absence from the game means he will likely require a good few weeks until he reaches full match fitness.
