Sunderland owner Stewart Donald says that he wanted to sign Jermain Defoe from Bournemouth in the summer transfer window.

Donald disclosed that Sunderland made a loan approach for Defoe, but Bournemouth turned it down (click here to read more).
The English businessman also suggested that the Black Cats could make another loan approach for the 36-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the January transfer window.
Defoe was a huge success during his time at the Black Cats from 2015 until 2017, and with the striker struggling for playing time at Bournemouth at the moment, it did make sense for Sunderland to make a loan approach.
The English striker has played just 14 minutes in the Premier League for Bournemouth so far this season and was able to make only 11 league starts for the Cherries during the 2017-18 campaign, according to WhoScored.
However, Sunderland may not be successful if they try for Defoe again in the January transfer window.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has made it clear that he does not plan to part company with Defoe in he January transfer window.
Howe told The Daily Echo: “Jermain has got a big future here.”
“On the training ground he is really beneficial for everybody – for me and for the young strikers we have in imparting his knowledge on the pitch,” added Howe.
“We have seen recently in training he has looked really sharp and I have been really pleased with his general performances in training. He is a huge part of what we do.”
