Goalkeeper Lee Camp, who came off the bench at Loftus Road after a red card for Jason Steele, has come in for particular criticism since arriving on loan from Cardiff City.
Ashley Fletcher, meanwhile, has failed to impress having not scored a goal after joining on a temporary deal from Middlesbrough, with Jake Clarke-Salter, Kazenga LuaLua and Ovie Ejaria the others who arrived at the Stadium of Light during January.
“We’ve had to take a gamble, it was the situation we were in. If you don’t have any money you don’t really have any choice, or a big choice anyway. We needed players in who wanted to play football,” Coleman told the Sunderland Echo.
“Some wanted to leave, they didn’t want to play Sunderland. We’ve struggled to get Kaz fit because of his ankle problem, Fletch hasn’t played at Boro and is under pressure.
“But look, at least they want to be here, without them we would already be done. We’re struggling for results but if we hadn’t got them in we would be even further away.”
Coleman’s men are four points from safety currently and sit bottom of the table in the second tier of English football as two relegations in as many years looks increasingly likely.
