Sunderland’s squad has been stretched to the limit over the past few weeks.

Speaking to reporters, Sunderland academy graduate George Honeyman shared his excitement at being involved in the first-team setup, and insisted he will be ready, should David Moyes call upon him again over the coming weeks, as quoted by the Chronicle.

The 22-year-old made his first appearance of the season for the Black Cats, during their 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Burnley on Tuesday night, after a whole host of first-team stars were ruled out through injury.

And Honeyman spoke to the media about the possibility of filling in again over the coming weeks, explaining how he wants to affect games in a more positive manner than he did against the Clarets, as quoted by the Chronicle:

“I hope to be involved in the next games. I don’t game into games thinking, ‘I don’t want to do anything wrong’, I want to set up goals, score goals, make the team play. I didn’t really do any of those at Burnley so I am disappointed with that, but I worked as hard as I can and that’s what you’ll get all the time. If the manager sees fit to play me against West Brom I’ll be more than happy to try and take my chance again.”

The Wearsiders currently sit in 19th position in the Premier League table, and are deeply entrenched in a relegation battle – hardly the kind of environment that is ideally suited for blooding youngsters in the first-team.

It might just be a case of needs must for David Moyes, however, with so many of his key senior players unavailable for selection.
