Sunderland are weighing up a move for Sheffield United forward Ched Evans as they aim to bring in a new striker before the close of the transfer window, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

League One hopefuls Sunderland are desperately searching for striking reinforcements ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline and Evans is the latest name to emerge on their radar.

Sunderland have been frustrated in their attempts to sign Wigan forward Will Grigg and they have been linked with the likes of Doncaster’s John Marquis, Gillingham’s Tom Eaves and Fleetwood’s Paddy Madden, but they are now ready to switch their attentions to Sheffield United’s Evans.

Evans is currently on loan at Fleetwood Town and he has caught the eye at Highbury with 12 goals in 26 games.

Sunderland are now pondering a move for the Wales international as they look to find a replacement for top scorer Josh Maja following his move to Bordeaux.

Sheffield United could cancel Evans’ loan at Fleetwood and sell him for the right offer before Thursday’s transfer deadline with the striker well down the pecking order at Bramall Lane.

Sunderland are keen to bring in a proven goalscorer to give them a boost for the promotion run-in and Evans could fit the bill with Sheffield United open to selling him.
