Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe scored his first goal for the club against Bournemouth.
Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe has told the Shields Gazette that David Moyes has been on to the team ‘like crazy’, since they were beaten by Arsenal two weekends’ ago.
Sunderland failed to win any of their first 10 Premier League matches, and collapsed to a 4-1 defeat against the Gunners.
Moyes expected a reaction from his side against Bournemouth on Saturday, and he got one.
Sunderland showed their grit to overcome Eddie Howe’s side, and pick up a 2-1 victory at Dean Court.
And Anichebe, who played a starring role for Sunderland on the south coast, said: “On Monday after the Arsenal game he came in and told us straight.
“It was more of the old manager, he told us straight: ‘Saturday is a must-win game’ and he had been onto us like crazy.
“It hasn’t been nice at times but he has been on and training has been hard. Everyone has been together.
“He said you have to win Saturday. No two ways about it. We had some of the boys back from injury and that is the mentality we had.
“Training has been super hard. We had double sessions – something footballers complain about! But we have had to do it.”
Anichebe was one of Sunderland’s key players as they got past Bournemouth in their most recent outing.
The powerful forward struck an equaliser for the Black Cats, before earning the penalty which Jermain Defoe converted to give the Wearsiders the three points.
Sunderland remain at the bottom of the Premier League table, but their victory over the Cherries has pushed them closer to safety and brought some much needed optimism back to the Stadium of Light.
