Is he fact a 34-year-old is earning his first cap in over three years a tale of redemption, or desperation?
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
The Guardian reports that Jermain Defoe will start for England against Lithuania in their World Cup qualifier, the first time the Sunderland striker has represented his country in more than three years.
With Jamie Vardy having picked up a knock during the 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany, Defoe is set to earn his 55th cap and first since playing against Chile in 2013.
The forward has been in good form this season, scoring 14 top flight goals for the relegation threatened Black Cats and many have praised Gareth Southgate for giving the veteran another chance.
However, while many see it as a great comeback is the fact the Three Lions are relying on a 34-year-old playing for the Premier League’s worst team a concern?
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
Admittedly injuries to Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge has elevated Defoe, but then Kane is the only one of those trio who is a regular starter for his club in any case.
There is certainly a glass half full, or empty, element to this argument, depending on whether this is seen as a fairytale return or an act of desperation.
