Kacper Przybylko was on trial at League One Sunderland last summer and now he is scoring goals for fun in MLS with Philadelphia Union.
The name Kacper Przybylko probably won’t mean much on the streets of Wearside.
After all, the German-born Pole never wore the famous red and white stripes of Sunderland in a competitive fixture.
Przybylko arrived in the north east of England for a trial after falling out of favour at Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2018. He clearly has a thing for sleeping giants.
He claimed on Instagram that it would be an ‘honour’ to join the Black Cats but Sunderland obviously didn’t share his enthusiasm. They decided against handing the 26-year-old a contract at the Stadium of Light but they might be regretting that now.
If Przybylko was disappointed by the snub, he’s certainly channelled his frustrations in the right manner.
The 6ft 4ins targetman has been a revelation since moving across the Atlantic with Philadelphia Union, scoring 15 times in 23 games to fire The Us to second in the table, behind reigning MLS Cup champions Atlanta United on goal-difference.
“From the moment we signed Kacper, he has worked incredibly hard to become a key contributor to our team,” sporting director Ernst Tanner told the Inquirer after extending his star man’s contract.
“Exercising his option was an easy decision for us as we continue to plan for 2020 and beyond while also aiming to finish 2019 strong.”
Considering that Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke have struggled with form and fitness since joining Sunderland in big-money deals, perhaps the Black Cats made the wrong decision letting Przybylko slip through the net.
