The Stoke City forward is a reported transfer target for Astonn Villa, but Sunderland’s need for the hitman is arguably greater.
Newly-appointed Black Cats boss Simon Grayson faces a tough challenge at the Stadium of Light this summer, as he looks to build a squad capable of bouncing back immediately to the Premier League, after last season’s disastrous campaign that eventually culminated in their relegation.
One particular area of concern for Grayson will be his forward options, after Jermain Defoe left to link up with Bournemouth last week, and the acquisition of an established striker will surely feature highly on the Sunderland manager’s agenda this summer.
With this in mind, the Wearside outfit should consider making a move for Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters, who is reportedly wanted by Aston Villa, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters in action
The hard-working 33-year-old would be an ideal signing for the Black Cats, with his tireless work ethic, and tenacious playing style being perfectly suited to the robust nature of Championship football.
The Republic of Ireland international can operate as an orthodox centre-forward, but is equally accomplished at playing anywhere along the front-line, and that kind of versatility will surely appeal greatly to the Sunderland boss.
He is no slouch in front of goal, having scored 94 career league goals, but it is his overall contribution, and the manner in which he brings his teammates into play which is the most impressive facet of his game.
Walters joined the Potters from Ipswich Town seven years ago, for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.75 million, but has just one year remaining on his current deal at the BET365 Stadium.
With Stoke unlikely to risk losing him for nothing next year, the Black Cats should be able to secure themselves a bargain if they attempt to sign the 33-year-old.
They will obviously face stringent competition for his signature from Villa, but if Grayson manages to convince the Irishman to choose Wearside over the Midlands, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Sunderland.
