Sunderland are amongst the host of Championship sides reportedly interested in signing Millwall striker Lee Gregory.

According to a report from the Daily Mail over the weekend, Sunderland are interested in signing Lee Gregory from Millwall during the summer transfer window as Chris Coleman looks to rebuild after a very difficult start to life at the Stadium of Light.

The Mail hints that staying up is going to be crucial to their hopes of signing Gregory, who has just over a year left on his contract at The Den. But given the Black Cats’ stature, it would not be a huge surprise if they still wanted to try their luck if they went down to League One this season.

Whether the 29-year-old would still be interested or not remains to be seen if Sunderland do go down, but one thing that is for sure is that signing Gregory would be a coup for the Black Cats whatever division they find themselves in next season.

Since Lewis Grabban’s loan spell came to an end, scoring goals appears to have a major problem for Sunderland. They scored two goals throughout the entirety of January, and have seen one of their strikers find the back of the net on just two occasions since the turn of the year – both of which have come from Joel Asoro.

Strengthening their striker options this summer is a must, and it seems unlikely at this stage that current loanee Ashley Fletcher will be a player that Coleman wants to bring back unless the financial package involved in the deal sees Middlesbrough do the Black Cats a serious favour.

Gregory may have been playing non-league football before his move to Millwall in 2014, but he deserves a huge amount of praise for the fact that he has not scored fewer than nine league goals in a campaign since 2010, and is on course to keep up with that record this season, having scored eight for Neil Harris’ side in the Championship.

Millwall appear to be developing into the kind of side that could surprise many by flirting with the top six in the coming years, and Gregory has been a key reason for their success, so getting the forward in would be a fantastic piece of business from Sunderland.

With the Mail reporting that several of their Championship rivals have looked at the Englishman this season, getting a deal done however, looks set to be a big ask for Coleman.
