Marcus Edwards has found first-team opportunites hard to come by at Spurs this season.
Overlooked by Mauricio Pochettino for Champions League action in favour of Kaziah Sterling, Tottenham’s Marcus Edwards should look for a loan move away from the club in January – and Championship strugglers Sunderland should consider making a move.
The Black Cats have plenty of attacking players on their books this season, a large majority of whom have underperformed and underwhelmed over the last 18 months.
Sunderland have been almost solely reliant on Lewis Grabban for goals, whilst Aiden McGeady has taken on a large bulk of the creative burden.
Attacking trio Callum McManaman, Jonathan Williams and the injured Duncan Watmore are all yet to score in the league, while youngsters Lynden Gooch and Joel Asoro are also finding their feet. If Chris Coleman’s side are to beat the drop, they need to bolster their goal threat in January, especially with Lewis Grabban possibly on his way out of the club, and do it cheaply.
Marcus Edwards could be the exciting solution for a Sunderland side showing improvement under Chris Coleman, who is renowned for getting the most out of youngsters. The 19-year-old can play all across the midfield and has the pace and goalscoring threat to cause Championship defences plenty of problems, as shown by his excellent performances in the UEFA Youth League this term.
He certianly isn’t the finished article yet, but Edwards needs to be playing first team football at this stage in his career and with Spurs seemingly unwilling to give him a try, a move to the Stadium of Light could work for both parties.
