Sunderland should look at a potential move for Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham whose contract expires this month.
Cardiff City’s Peter Whittingham is out of contract this month
Peter Whittingham looks set to depart from Cardiff City when his contract runs out at the end of this month. The midfielder has been at the club since 2007 but no new deal looks closer to being agreed.
According to Wales Online, the 32-year-old is said to be weighing up his options and a number of rival Championship clubs are keen on making a move for the potential free-agent; Sunderland would be wise to make an offer for Whittingham as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Peter Whittingham joined Cardiff from Aston Villa in 2007.
After moving to South Wales over a decade ago, Whittingham has made 457 appearances for the Bluebirds and in this time has scored 96 goals and notched up 93 assists.
Whittingham has spent the majority of his career in the Championship and has 400 club appearances under his belt at this level. He helped lead Cardiff to promotion to the Premier League in 2013 but was unable to help them avoid immediate relegation back to England’s second tier, where they have remained since.
Sunderland will be playing in the Championship for the first time in 10 years and a major squad overhaul looks set to take place over the summer.
Peter Whittingham scored seven goals and notched up eight assists last season
Whittingham’s experience and know-how of the Championship would be invaluable to the Black Cats if he was to move to the North-East.
His ability to score goals from the midfield area would be a welcome addition to the Stadium of Light, as their central midfield has been unable to provide both goals and creativity in recent seasons.
With Black Cats supporters crying out for their side to include more talent developed through the academy, a player in Whittingham’s mould would fit nicely into a potentially more youthful Sunderland side.
