Sunderland were linked with a move for Ipswich Town defender Adam Webster earlier this year, but perhaps his price has just risen sharply.
Sunderland manager David Moyes
With Sunderland preparing for life in the Championship, it would hardly be a surprise if the Black Cats looked to reignite their interest in Ipswich Town defender Adam Webster from earlier in the season with a summer bid.
The Sun reported back in December that David Moyes’ men were keen on the 22-year-old, and given how he has played for the Tractor Boys during the campaign, it would arguably be an extremely sensible move from the recently-relegated side to target a deal.
Webster – who made 23 league appearances this term – has been excellent for Ipswich, and would undoubtedly be the kind of player that Sunderland should look to target as they try and construct a squad capable of getting back to the highest level at the earliest opportunity.
But, it is fair to say that perhaps Ipswich’s early transfer activity may make a move slightly more difficult for the Black Cats.
Ipswich’s Adam Webster was a target for Sunderland earlier in the season
Ipswich announced on their official website this week that they have released Christophe Berra due to personal reasons, and given that they will not receive a fee for the Scotsman, it would surely be fair to assume that they will be extremely determined to keep hold of Webster so they do not need to replace two centre-backs this summer.
Therefore, it would certainly not be out of the question to suggest that Ipswich will dig their heels in and set a higher asking price for Webster than they would if they expected to have Berra available to them next season.
But if Sunderland do decide to reignite their interest, and are serious about securing promotion at the first attempt, then surely doing everything they can to sign Webster simply has to be on the agenda.
