Sunderland tried to sign Cyrus Christie back in 2013, before Derby County swooped.
According to a report in the Telegraph, Derby County have made Cyrus Christie available for just £1.5 million – and that should put Sunderland on alert.
Sunderland have a limited transfer budget to work with this summer, meaning they are restricted with what players they can bring to the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are heaving to search for bargains, and Christie certainly fits into that category.
Christie has proven his quality at Championship level ever since moving to Derby back in 2014, and he would add freshness and energy to Sunderland’s team.
The Black Cats actually identified Christie’s potential when he was playing for Coventry City four years ago (Daily Mirror), but they could not get a deal done at the time.
However, the time has now come for Sunderland to revisit their interest and bring Christie to Wearside.
Sunderland will need to add Championship experience if they are to achieve an immediate promotion back to the Premier League and Christie would bring that.
Crucially, Christie is also still only 24 – so he has plenty of time to develop if he was to move to Sunderland.
The Black Cats have had a tendency to sign veteran players in recent times, but that policy needs to change – and the signing of Christie would be a good start.
