Everton manager Ronald Koeman is keen on keeping Gareth Barry, but hinted he wouldn’t stand in his way if the former Aston Villa midfielder asked to leave.
Barry is a vastly experienced midfielder and at 36 he is still good enough to play at the highest level.
The former England midfielder joined Everton in 2014 from Manchester City on a permanent move (he played for Everton in 2013-14 on loan) and has been a key player for the side.
In each of the last three seasons, he has made 33 appearances in the Premier League, but is expected to drop down the pecking order at the club.
Sunderland should make a move for Barry
The Black Cats must not waste this opportunity to sign a top-quality player who would certainly add depth and quality to Simon Grayson’s side.
He will bring a wealth of experience in the dressing room and could help Sunderland gain promotion back to the Premier League.
Players like John Terry have stepped down to the Championship to enjoy regular football, and Barry certainly can take that option.
Everton could be willing to sell, and Sunderland should at least try to lure him to the Stadium of Light before the transfer window closes.
