Greg Halford is a free agent at the moment following his departure from Cardiff City this summer, and Sunderland should make a move.
Sunderland need experienced footballers who can help the club back to the Championship from League One, and the Black Cats would be wise to look at Halford.
The 33-year-old is a versatile footballer who can operate as a right-back or as a centre-back, and the former Cardiff man can also play in central midfield or on the right side of midfield.
During his spell at the Stadium of Light from 2007 until 2009, the former England Under-20 international failed to make an impact, but he is now much better and more experienced.
Halford did well during his time at Cardiff, and despite Sunderland having defenders such as Lamina Kone, Papy Djilobodji, Adam Matthews and Donald Love on their books at the moment, they should make a move for the former Nottingham Forest man.
After all, it is hard to see Kone and Djilobodji stay at Sunderland next season, and it will not a bad idea to have a strong squad in what is going to be a very tough and rigorous in League One.
