The Everton star is a reported transfer target for Birmingham City, but Sunderland should gatecrash the party.
Recently-appointed Black Cats boss Simon Grayson will be looking to add more quality in the attacking areas of his squad this summer, after their woeful record of just 29 goals scored in 38 Premier League games eventually proved to be a major contributing factor behind their relegation to the Championship.
And with this in mind, Sunderland should consider joining the race to sign Aaron Lennon, who has been linked with a move to Birmingham City, according to the Daily Mail.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman and Aaron Lennon
The 30-year-old would be just the type of player the Wearsiders need, especially following Sebastian Larsson’s exit from the Stadium of Light.
It is no secret that the former Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur man isn’t as quick as he used to be, but he is no slouch either, and the direct manner in which he plays the game would provide the Black Cats with more potency to their attacking play.
Lennon is renowned for taking on opposing full-backs, and getting into dangerous areas – something that Sunderland failed to do enough of last season.
The Toffees man has not played since February 11th of this year, so it will be imperative for him to gain regular action this term, and he will be unlikely to find that at Goodison Park, what with the whole host of quality additions made by Ronald Koeman already this summer.
And if Grayson can convince the former England international into making the switch to Wearside, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Sunderland.
