Sunderland will not want to lose their current stopper but if they do the Tottenham Hotspur man would be a perfect replacement.
According to a report from ESPN, Sunderland are expecting a bid from Manchester City for goalkeeper Jordan Pickford this summer.
The 23-year-old has played 21 times for the Black Cats this campaign, and while a knee injury struck mid-season he has recently returned to the starting line-up.
With a contract until 2020, Sunderland hold the cards when it comes to Pickford, but if they are relegated come May they will find it increasingly hard to keep hold of the talented stopper.
Assuming the worst and Sunderland do lose Pickford sooner rather than later, their manager David Moyes could do a lot worse than look at Tottenham Hotspur player Michel Vorm as a replacement.
The Dutch international is very much second choice at White Hart Lane, appearing predominantly in the cup competitions with Hugo Lloris starting for Spurs in the Premier League.
But the loan signing of Pau Lopez – with the option of a permanent deal at the end of the season – has put Vorm’s future even as a back-up option in doubt, and at 33 he will desperate to play as often as possible for the next few years.
With just 18 months remaining on his Tottenham contract Vorm could be available for a cut-price fee and, while he may not want to drop down into the Championship, he will know Sunderland’s stay could be a brief one – assuming they fail to make the great escape between now and May.
The 15-capped Netherlands international has been the model professional at Tottenham, but it is time he played regularly and he could replace the hole left if Pickford was tempted by a move to City or another of the Premier League big boys.
