News that Anthony Stokes could be freed by Hibernian should pique the interest of Sunderland.

According to the Scottish Sun, the 29-year-old’s behaviour on a recent club trip to Portugal has led to him being told to find new employment.

And with Sunderland said to be strapped for cash this month, unless they raise funds through sales of their own, the prospect of adding an experienced striker for nothing is one that should be explored.

Chris Coleman’s side are down to the bare bones in attack, with the departures of James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban leaving the Welshman with only teenage duo Joel Asoro and Josh Maja to call on.

And though Stokes struggled during a spell at the Stadium of Light earlier in his career, the Irishman has had great success north of the border – where he’s scored 102 goals in 209 top flight appearances.

Seven of those have arrived this season alone, and while some Sunderland supporters will perhaps scoff at the idea of bringing him back to Wearside – beggars really cannot be choosers.

It might be their best option.
