Sunderland should consider a move for Stoke City’s defender, whose current deal is close to expiry.
The Black Cats are currently in a whole world of trouble, rooted firmly at the bottom of the Premier League table, and seemingly with no potential signings of note on the horizon.
There has to be a certain level of sympathy for David Moyes, however, with it being well known that he has limited funds with which to bring in the players required to help drag his side away from trouble.
Because of this, he will have to be extremely smart in his player recruitment, and a useful option for Sunderland could be Stoke City’s Glen Johnson, whose contract with the Potters expires in the summer.

The 32-year-old can play either at right-back or left-back, and with Patrick van Aanholt looking ever more likely to join Crystal Palace, Johnson could prove to be a welcome addition to the Black Cats’ backline.
He is still incredibly fit, despite his advancing years, and his ability to get up and down the flank for the entirety of the 90 minutes would enable him to fill the void left behind by the Dutchman, should he eventually leave the Stadium of Light.

Whether Mark Hughes would be willing to allow Johnson to leave the club this month is unclear, but with his contract being so close to expiry, Stoke would surely find it hard to reject a reasonable offer for the former West Ham United and Chelsea man.
And with just a week remaining before the transfer window slams shut, Moyes should seriously consider a move for the former England international.
