Sunderland have reportedly made Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie their top target.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have made Celtic’s Ryan Christie their top transfer target, and they should be encouraged by Brendan Rodgers’ latest comments about his transfer plans.

Rodgers has confirmed that Celtic want to offload some of their younger players to get them first team football.

Although Rodgers did not go as far as naming Christie, he certainly fits the description of the players who could leave Parkhead soon.

“There are going to be players going out on loan,” Rodgers told the Telegraph.

“Probably young players who will go and get experience. When I came in here, I felt before I touched a ball that it was too big [the squad] – one, in order for competition and two, for spirit.

“It’s very difficult when you’ve got 29 players plus goalkeepers and the squad is round about that just now, so naturally, it’s the same idea. It’s too big. It’s something I’m sure will change over the next few days.”

The comments surely offer hope to Sunderland that they could secure the signature of Christie, if they push for it.

Sunderland are understood to have to offload some of their fringe players before they can make any more additions to their squad.

The Black Cats are working on getting rid of their higher earners, but have a limited time left in the transfer window.

If Christie was to arrive from Celtic, he could offer Jack Ross more creativity in attacking areas, as Sunderland go for promotion.
