Sunderland have been heavily linked with Derby County striker Chris Martin recently.

According to The Sun, Sunderland will have to take Chris Martin on loan for 18 months if they want to sign him from Derby County, and they should agree to that deal.

Martin is thought to be available for loan this month, with Sunderland keen to bring the target man in on loan.

Derby are demanding that whoever takes the forward on loan, keeps him for next season too.

But, for Sunderland, that should make the deal more appealing rather than less.

Sunderland have already seen the dangers of taking a striker on loan, only to lose him after six months.

Lewis Grabban was Sunderland’s best player in the first half of the campaign, but he was recalled by Bournemouth, as his good form caught the eye.

Sunderland are now very short of options up-front, and Martin’s arrival would undoubtedly improve them.

Martin is a proven goalscorer at Championship level, and has proven his ability to lead the line to a high quality over a number of seasons.

Sunderland should have no concerns about relying on him for next season. And it is hard to see a down-side for Sunderland in taking Martin on a longer-term deal than they initially planned.
