The 21-year-old has excelled on loan at Blackburn Rovers this season, and has a host of admirers heading into the summer, including Sunderland and Cardiff.

Sunderland have already been dealt a blow in their summer recruitment for the Championship, as it seems as if Cardiff City have beaten them to the punch for Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, as reports The Sun.

21-year-old Gallagher scored 12 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions for a Blackburn Rovers side that would ultimately go down, but his brilliant efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by other clubs in the division.

According to the paper edition of The Sun on Sunday the 7th May, Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers both have a keen interest in Gallagher’s services, but Cardiff have made the first move by lodging a £3m bid for the young striker.

While it remains unclear if Southampton will accept that offer, with Jermain Defoe set to depart the Stadium of Light, a new striker is imperative for Sunderland, and given Gallagher’s age, ability, potential and resale factor, £3m for the England U20 international would be a wise investment.

With Cardiff accelerating matters, Sunderland will have to act quickly if they are to avoid missing out on one of their transfer targets, however Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock claimed the other day that he is close to signing three or four new players, as reports BBC Sport, and it’s very possible Gallagher could be one of them.

Sunderland were relegated to the Championship a few weeks ago, and have three games left of their Premier League campaign before going again in England’s second division.
