The Black Cats loanee went off in the second half of the win over Pompey at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland manager Jack Ross has shed some light on the knock suffered by Marc McNulty in Saturday’s League One win over Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light (Sunderland Echo).
The on-loan Reading striker went off five minutes into the second half and, speaking after the 2-1 triumph, the Black Cats boss confirmed that the 26-year-old had suffered a hamstring injury.
Ross claimed that, while McNulty’s injury does not appear serious, the quick turnaround in league games – Sunderland head to Rochdale on Tuesday night – means the player is unlikely to recover before the next fixture.
“It is a hamstring injury,” the Scot told the Sunderland Echo. “I don’t think it is overly serious but we have a quick turnaround given the crazy nature of the fixture schedule so early in the season. So we will just see how he is. It is probably unlikely it will settle down in time for Tuesday but we’ll see how he is tomorrow morning.”
McNulty had played well for Sunderland prior to his forced substitution, running the channels well and linking up play nicely, and as such it proved a blow when he came off, so the Black Cats faithful will be hoping for him to make a swift recovery from this knock.
Sunderland came from behind to win at the Stadium of Light, with Marcus Harness putting the visitors ahead midway through the first half before Jordan Willis equalised just before the half-hour, and Chris Maguire completed the turnaround five minutes before the break.
