According to a report in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Sunderland are targeting Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, and he could be just what they need.

Sunderland’s goalkeeping problems have been well publicised this season, with both Jason Steele and Robbin Ruiter really struggling.

Ruiter has been favoured since Chris Coleman came in, but the summer signing has hardly looked assured.

The German stopper has gifted oppositions sides goals, and his confidence appears to be at rock bottom.

While Lonergan hasn’t exactly been unbeatable in Leeds’ net, he would at least offer Sunderland a more solid option than they currently have.

Lonergan has a great deal of Championship experience, and has proven himself a capable goalkeeper in the second tier over the course of his career.

And Sunderland really need the transfer to come off, as finally having a goalkeeper that they could have some faith in, should make the whole team feel a lot more confident.
