Everton are reportedly looking to offload Tyias Browning before Friday’s deadline, which ends at 5pm for Football League clubs, and Sunderland should consider a bid to bring the centre-back to the Stadium of Light for a second spell.
Browning endured an indifferent loan spell at Sunderland last season, as he made 29 appearances for the Black Cats but failed to prevent the club from suffering relegation to League One.
But it is at centre-back where manager Jack Ross should have his concerns. Indeed, Glenn Loovens going off at half time against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday with a tight groin could be something that becomes common throughout the season.
At 34, Loovens is likely to suffer the odd injury with the demands of a 46-game season taking its toll. His replacement on Saturday Alim Ozturk has been poor since joining the club this summer.
Indeed, Ozturk was at fault for Sunderland’s Carabao Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday and fans are yet to be convinced by the Turkish stopper who once turned out for Scottish Premiership side Hearts.
The Liverpool Echo claim Everton are looking to find a new club for Browning this summer, with less than 24 hours to go in the transfer window. Sunderland need depth at centre-back, and Browning would be ideal.
The defender knows the club, knows the expectations of fans and knows the players already. He would certainly provide cover, and has the quality to show he is more than capable of breaking into the first team.
Landing him on loan for the entire 2018-19 season will be a move suited to all parties, and it could even materialise in a permanent move with the defender’s Everton contract expiring next summer.
