Sunderland could be playing Championship football next season but they have the players to come straight back up.
Sunderland’s draw with Newcastle United on Sunday means the Black Cats are still firmly in a relegation battle, with one from the Magpies and Sam Allardyce’s men almost certain to lose their top-flight status this season.
Both could still go if Norwich City build up a head of steam, yet while it is unthinkable for Sunderland fans they have the players to make an immediate return to the Premier League if the worst does happen in May.
Lamine Kone
January signing Lamine Kone has wasted little time making an impact at the Stadium of Light and while there will be plenty of clubs interested in him if Sunderland are relegated they would be crazy to part with him so soon.
The Championship is a tough league to escape from but Kone’s grit and ability at both ends of the field would give them a great chance of doing just that.
Wahbi Khazri
Another recent addition that has excelled, Wahbi Khazri could be the creative catalyst to fire Sunderland up at the first time of asking.
The 25-year-old can unlock defences and would be a jewel in the crown for a side fighting for the Championship title.
Jermain Defoe
Jermain Defoe has done his best to keep Sunderland in the top flight and he still could manage that feat. But if he doesn’t his goals will be needed next season.
The former England international could get a truck-load in the second tier and would make relatively light work of the most resilient defences.
Duncan Watmore
As much as Sunderland will rely on their experienced players if the worst does happen, they will also give chances to youngsters and Duncan Watmore is the cream of the crop.
The 22-year-old has featured 20 times for Sunderland’s first-team to date, scoring three goals in the process, and he could blossom into one of their best players over time.
