Sunderland have posted an on-this-day video of Rangers striker Jermain Defoe on their official Twitter account, as Wednesday signalled four years since he joined the Black Cats in 2015.

Defoe, 36, joined Rangers this month on an 18-month loan deal from Premier League side Bournemouth after struggling for game time at the Vitality Stadium under Eddie Howe. It has caused quite a stir north of the border.

But four years ago, a 32-year-old Defoe joined Sunderland from MLS side Toronto, and spent the next two and a half years at the Stadium of Light before the club were relegated to the Championship.

Sunderland posted on their official account a montage of his best goals for the Wearside club during his time at the Stadium of Light, describing him as “one of the very best in the business.”

Despite playing for a side that were constantly fighting against relegation, Defoe amassed a record of 37 goals in just 93 league and cup appearances for Sunderland before joining Bournemouth in the summer of 2017.

Defoe could now make his debut for the Teddy Bears on Friday night, as Steven Gerrard takes his side to Scottish minnows Cowdenbeath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
