Simon Grayson’s decision to sell Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone looks like a huge mistake.
On Monday, Sunderland fans expressed their disappointment with January signing Lee Camp.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper joined Sunderland on a half-season loan from Cardiff City in a bid to solve the Black Cats’ problems between the sticks.
But fast forward nearly a month and Camp is not proving a much better option than Jason Steele or Robbin Ruiter.
Sunderland sit rock bottom of the Championship and their problems this season might stem from the sale of Jordan Pickford to Everton – but then-manager Simon Grayson made things a whole lot worse by then selling Vito Mannone to Reading for £2 million less than a month later.
Mannone was by no means a brilliant goalkeeper, but he was in comparison to Camp, Steele or Ruiter and the decision to sell both keepers in the same transfer window is looking like a huge mistake by Grayson.
You can’t blame him for selling Pickford, given that Everton were willing to pay £30 million and the recently-relegated Wearsiders couldn’t turn that down, but did they really have to accept the £2 million for Mannone?
Grayson’s incomings were clearly not good enough and current boss Chris Coleman is suffering as a result, but the sale of the former Arsenal man might be the worst bit of business that they did last summer.
