Sunderland made a major signing on January transfer deadline day, bringing in Will Grigg from Wigan Athletic.

According to BBC Sport, the League One outfit paid the Championship club a transfer fee of £4 million in order to secure the services of the 27-year-old Northern Ireland international striker.

The striker has failed to make a massive impact in the Championship, but the Northern Ireland international has a proven record in League One.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the striker scored 19 goals and provided four assists in 43 League One appearances for Wigan during the 2017-18 season.

Back in 2015-16, Grigg scored 25 goals and provided six assists in 40 League One matches for the Latics, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

With Sunderland aiming for automatic promotion from League One to the Championship at the end of the season, Grigg is a very good signing for the Black Cats, even for £4m.

However, Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has suggested on Twitter that the Black Cats did not pay £4m upfront for Grigg and has also sent a heartfelt message to the fans about supporting the team for the second half of the season.
