The Black Cats have beaten two Premier League sides in the League Cup this season, while the Magpies have just one top-flight victory this term.

Following last night’s League Cup victory, a number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to rejoice in a particular statistic – namely that the Black Cats have beaten more Premier League teams this season than Newcastle United.

Sunderland followed up their first-round win over Accrington Stanley and second-round victory over Premier League Burnley by overcoming top-flight newcomers Sheffield United last night, Max Power with an emphatic early winner.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have only picked up one win in the top flight this season, beating Tottenham Hotspur in North London back in August, along with two draws and three defeats from their other five fixtures so far, results which have left Steve Bruce’s side close to the bottom three in the fledgling table.

Admittedly, the comeback from numerous Newcastle fans involved the fact that there’s currently two divisions between the Tyneside club and the Wearside outfit, though some of the response to that was along the lines of “and yet we’ve still beaten more PL sides than you”.

Needless to say there was a fair bit of banter exchanged between the two sets of fans on social media after the Blades game:
