Sunderland boss David Moyes had limited funds to play with in January.

Black Cats centre-back Joleon Lescott spoke to reporters regarding the challenge his side face ahead of them this season, and explained how his experience of playing for Aston Villa during their woeful 2015/16 Premier League campaign could help him and his teammates this term, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

The 34-year-old moved to the Stadium of Light in late January on a free transfer, after his contract was cancelled with Greek side AEK Athens.

David Moyes was desperately short of bodies and experience, and armed with limited funds, he decided to bring the former Villa man to the club on a short-term deal.

And Lescott spoke to reporters about the qualities he hopes he can bring to the Wearsiders in their battle against relegation, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail:

“It is a big challenge and the stakes are the same, but the lads have been in this situation before so hopefully I won’t need to draw on my experiences last season – but if need be, I will do so. The lads know what needs to happen, they know we have to fight to the end. We’ve been here before, but it is not going to be easy.”

Many Sunderland fans questioned the wisdom in signing Lescott, after his noncommittal behaviour during his time at Villa Park.

Everton striker would have been a great January addition for the Black Cats

But it will be unfair to judge the experienced centre-back until he at least has had a run of games under his belt for the Black Cats.

The jury is still most definitely out on Lescott though.
