There is a suggestion that the former player, manager, chairman and owner could return to Sunderland, and that could only be a good move.

Niall Quinn Director of International Development Sunderland AFC attends the launch of 'Invest in Africa' on January 24, 2012 in Accra, Ghana.

Niall Quinn is in takeover talks with Sunderland once again, according to The Sun.

The former Republic of Ireland international represented the Black Cats as a player before becoming the owner, manager and chairman at the Stadium of Light following his retirement.

And Sunderland fans will now wait with bated breath to see if anything becomes of this interest.

For while many on Wearside would simply be happy to see the back of current owner Ellis Short, a man like Quinn is also exactly what Sunderland need.

Quinn had a very difficult spell as manager at Sunderland, but his love for the club was evident in the overall impact he had upon his second arrival in 2006, restoring standards and Premier League status with the appointment of Roy Keane.

With the Black Cats now very much in the doldrums under an absent owner, they could only benefit from having a passionate Sunderland man at the helm.

Quinn surely would not stand for some of the behaviour at the club in recent weeks, months and years, and would do whatever he could to get them back on track.

Sunderland cannot afford to go on much longer with things the way they are – their slump may not necessarily end in League One given the problems throughout the club.

Wearside needs a hero and Quinn, once again, can be that.
