James Wilson admits that he expects to leave Premier League powerhouses Manchester United with League One Sunderland having shown an interest in the summer.
Sunderland missed out on signing James Wilson last summer.
According to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats were keen to bring the striker to the Stadium of Light on loan from Manchester United. But he moved north of the border instead, joining Aberdeen until the end of the season.
But Sunderland might get another chance this summer to bring Wilson to Wearside, should they decide to reignite their interest. His contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer and, speaking to ESPN, the 23-year-old has admitted that he expects to become a free agent.
“I think I’ve come to terms with (leaving United),” said Wilson, who famously scored twice on his first-team debut in 2014.
“I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent certain I’m going to leave. There’s still a slight chance I might get a contract but I think I’m edging towards leaving in the summer.”
Sunderland, then, should be keeping tabs on the situation.
The Black Cats might have spent a hefty £4 million on Will Grigg on the final day of the January transfer window (BBC) but the early signs suggest that replacing departed top scorer Josh Maja could be easier said than done.
Charlie Wyke, with just two goals so far, has struggled with injuries all season while Kazaiah Sterling is only on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
Wilson, meanwhile, has plenty of Championship experience after loan spell at Brighton and Derby. That is another tick against his name if Sunderland are promoted this season.
