The USA international has suffered ankle ligament damage.
Sunderland take on reigning Premier League champions Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon.
However, the Black Cats will have to take part in the game without their American talent Lynden Gooch.
The 20-year-old USA international has been ruled out for up to three months with ankle ligament damage and David Moyes must do without him for the time being.

Gooch is obviously devastated with the injury and had this message for the Sunderland fans and general well-wishers on his Twitter account yesterday:
Gooch has become a key member of the Sunderland squad under the guidance of Moyes, who has brought him into the fore.
He had recently dropped out of the starting XI, as Moyes looked to experience after the club’s difficult start to the Premier League campaign.

But his absence will still be keenly felt as he was a regular player from the Sunderland bench and ahead of the busy winter schedule the Black Cats need as many options available to them as possible.
They will hope to get an important win in the Premier League this weekend as they continue their fight against relegation.
