Sunderland want Matej Kovar on loan from Manchester United – and Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka could aid the deal.

The Black Cats are reeling at the moment with boss Alex Neil heading off to Championship rivals Stoke City.

Sunderland must now try and find a new manager, which may mean that potential signings are pushed to the back burner in the final days of the window.

Still, Sunderland are now being linked with something of a surprise move with another goalkeeper on their radar.

Sunderland want Matej Kovar

The Sun report that Sunderland are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar on loan.

It’s stated that Kovar will be allowed to leave United on loan as soon as they bring in a new number two goalkeeper behind David De Gea.

United are pushing to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, and with Tom Heaton also on board as additional cover, Kovar could leave.

There’s an irony in a Newcastle player helping Sunderland make a new signing, but this one would be a little surprising.

Sunderland already have a talented young goalkeeper in Anthony Patterson and have signed backup to him by landing ex-Portsmouth stopper Alex Bass this summer.

Signing another goalkeeper just doesn’t really add up for Sunderland right now, and United would surely expect plenty of playing time for Kovar.

Kovar, 22, joined United from FC Slovacko in his native Czech Republic back in 2018.

The shot-stopper joined Swindon Town on loan in in August 2020 but was recalled in the following January, and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Burton Albion.

Out of contract next summer, it feels unlikely that Kovar will emerge into United’s first team any time soon.

A move away in the coming days seems likely, but we just can’t see Sunderland being Kovar’s new home.
