Garry Monk quit his Leeds United role on Thursday, but could he soon be sworn in at Sunderland?

Garry Monk has gone straight into contention to become Sunderland’s next manager, according to Sky Bet‘s latest odds.

The 38-year-old resigned from his Leeds United post on Thursday afternoon and has already been made second favourite to take charge at the Stadium of Light – tied with Nigel Pearson at 6/1.

Monk’s emergence does not appear to have affected Derek McInnes’ chances of landing the role, however, with the Aberdeen boss’ odds rising slightly from 7/4 to 2/1.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has drifted from 6/1 to 8/1, with Aitor Karanka going back down to 12/1 from 8s.

Karanka, incidentally, has already been made odds on favourite to succeed Monk at Leeds, while the latter is front-runner for both the Middlesbrough and Cystal Palace positions.

If McInnes is the man for Sunderland, it is unlikely we will see any movement until after the weekend, when Aberdeen face Celtic in the final of the Scottish Cup.

The 45-year-old has previous Championship management experience from his time at Bristol City, and won promotion from Scotland’s equivalent division with St Johnstone eight years ago.
