Chris Coleman has confirmed that Sunderland could be without Jonny Williams for up to three months.

With Chris Coleman already facing an uphill battle trying to keep Sunderland in the Championship, the last thing he needed was to lose Duncan Watmore for the rest of the season and then, for Jonny Williams to join him on the sidelines.

In comments reported by The Irish Sun, Coleman has confirmed that the shoulder injury that saw the on-loan Crystal Palace midfielder taken off after just 16 minutes against Millwall at the weekend could potentially keep Williams out for up to three months.

Williams has endured a hugely difficult time with injuries throughout his career, but there is no question that he would have been one of the players who Coleman may have been relying on to inspire the turnaround to take the Black Cats away from trouble.

The 24-year-old knows Coleman well as it was the Sunderland boss who handed him his first Wales cap and subsequently selected him on a further 17 occasions, which is quite something when you consider that injury has meant that Williams has not managed more than 20 club appearances in a single campaign since the 2013/14 season.

Had injuries not been such a factor in the midfielder’s career to date, it would be fair to suggest that he would have stood a fantastic chance of being a regular fixture in the Premier League – so Coleman would have been hoping that he was blessed with a bit of luck injury-wise during the coming months to enable him to show that quality that he knows he has.

Unfortunately however, Coleman will now have to cope for a significant period of time without two of the players he may have viewed as being integral to leading the fightback.
