Sunderland have brought in a few free transfers this summer, and one of them may not have actually been made official just yet.

The Black Cats have signed Lee Burge and Conor McLaughlin for their first team, whilst Ruben Sammut, Michael Collins and Ahmed Abdelkader have also joined.

Now, the name of Burnley striker Tinashe Chakwana is being mentioned too, as The Herald in his native Zimbabwe claim he has already joined Sunderland.

Sunderland have yet to announce any kind of deal with Chakwana, meaning this may be a move made in secret so far, or that The Herald have jumped the gun slightly.

Chakwana, 20, has been coming up through the Burnley ranks, but was released at the end of the season, with the Clarets seemingly feeling he couldn’t progress any further at Turf Moor.

A move down to League One with Sunderland may give him a shot at first-team football, and fans may well be excited about the youngster’s arrival given how highly he was praised last year.

Burnley academy boss Jon Pepper told the Burnley Express that he felt Chakwana was similar to Jermain Defoe, in the way that he could play on the shoulder, or take the ball into feet just as well, whilst being a fine finisher too.

Sunderland fans will hope that Chakwana really is the next Defoe, as he was a Stadium of Light hero with 37 goals in 93 games, though he of course has a long way to go.
