Sunderland are interested in signing Leigh Griffiths from Celtic in the summer transfer window, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The Scottish Sun are reporting that English club Sunderland are planning a ‘shock move’ for Celtic striker Griffiths.

Sunderland, now in League One, are considering a loan move for the Scotland international striker.

The Black Cats’ manager, Lee Johnson, wants to sign a striker this summer.

The 30-year-old signed a one-year contact extension at Celtic earlier this month.

Could a transfer happen?

Griffiths signing a one-year extension suggests that Celtic want to keep the striker.

The Scotland international has not been at his best for a while, but it appears that the Hoops have faith in the 30-year-old, who has been on the books of Celtic since January 2014 when he joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £1 million.

Celtic will begin their quest to clinch a place in the Champions League group stage next week.

New manager Ange Postecoglou’s will want options in his squad, and it is unlikely that any deal will happen soon.

As reported by Sky Sports, Griffiths has made 261 appearances for Celtic, scoring 123 goals in the process.
