The Benfica winger is also being targeted by Granada.

Sunderland are reportedly in the hunt for Benfica midfielder Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez.

The Moroccan international is not part of the first-team plans in the Portuguese capital and the club are in talks with Spanish side Granada about a move, but Sunderland are set to make a move as well and have the financial firepower to win the race.

A Bola are reporting that Sunderland are not alone in the race for the player. Hamburg, Toulouse, Alaves and Club Brugge are all keen – but do not have the finances to compete with Sunderland or Granada.

The Moroccan international, who has also been capped twice by Belgium, joined Benfica last summer from Standard Liege. He has also previously played for Anzhi Makhachkala – when the Russian side were throwing money at the squad.

But he has struggled for regular football at the Stadium of Light and it appears he is now available.

Sunderland boss David Moyes is still looking to bring in some new faces to strengthen the club before the transfer window shuts next week.

The Moroccan, who can play on either wing, would be a shrewd piece of business from Sunderland if they can secure a deal for the 27-year-old.
