Colin Dagba is one of a number of players training with Paris Saint-Germain’s so-called ‘bomb squad’ with Sunderland in talks to bring the three-time Ligue 1 winner to the Championship.

While Kylian Mbappe trains away from the rest of the PSG squad – arguably the finest footballer on planet paying the price for refusing to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes – he is far from the only big-name player facing an uncertain future at Luis Enrique’s side.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has also been omitted from PSG’s pre-season tour. Ditto Leandro Paredes and Julian Draxler, plus £32 million defender Abdou Diallo.

According to French publication Foot Mercato, Sunderland opened talks with the 24-year-old full-back this week, and PSG will not stand in his way should the Black Cats make an offer they deem acceptable.

Sunderland could sign another PSG man

Dagba has played 77 games for Les Parisiens, winning the Ligue 1 title on three occasions. But, two years on from his outstanding Champions League display against Bayern Munich and Kingsley Coman, Dagba will be allowed to leave; Sunderland seemingly emerging as the most likely destination for a player who spent last term on loan at Strasbourg.

Tony Mowbray’s side have a good relationship with PSG after loaning Edouard Michut in 2022/23. Dagba, who played under Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino in France, would give Sunderland some much-needed depth for the right-back spot too, after Niall Huggins endured an injury-ruined campaign at the Stadium of Light.

Mowbray is hoping for a season of redemption for Huggins. The former Leeds youngster played only one Championship game over the last 12 months and is now hoping to make up for lost time.

“Niall (returning from injury) is a bonus ball for us. He’s a good footballer, very athletic, very versatile. Very confident with the ball at his feet,” Mowbray tells the Northern Echo.

“I’m really pleased for Niall. He has to prove his robustness throughout the season and play games and be available to play games, and he has to try and force his way into the team.

“But he’s a really positive asset for the football club.”
