The Sunderland defender is reportedly on a high wage, which they will need to reduce if they are to strengthen in January.

Sunderland are hoping to boost their transfer funds by making defender Sebastian Coates’ loan deal at Sporting Lisbon permanent, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
Coates is currently on an 18-month loan deal at the Portuguese giants and has received praise from his performances at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Newcastle Chronicle claim that Sporting have option to sign the Uruguayan defender for £4.5 million at the end of the season, but that the deal could be brought forward to January, as the Black Cats look to strengthen once the transfer window re-opens.
Sunderland have only two points in the Premier League so far and David Moyes will no doubt hope to improve his squad come January, but the club are having to free up funds in order to purchase new players, the local newspaper reports.

The Chronicle says Coates is on £50,000-a-week and Sunderland will need to ensure that he is taken off of their wage bill if they want to sign new players in their bid to stay in the Premier League.
Sporting initially agreed a six-month loan deal for Coates, but extended it for a further 12 months after he impressed during his short stint in Portugal.
