Sunderland went down 2-1 at Eastlands on Saturday night.
Paddy McNair endured heartbreak on his Sunderland debut by scoring a late own goal which handed Manchester City a 2-1 win at Eastlands on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old defender only joined Sunderland from Manchester United on Thursday in a £5.5 million deal.
And he had looked okay in the home of his former club’s bitter rivals but he diverted a header into his own net on 87 minutes to render the Black Cats’ hard work meaningless in the end.
On 71 minutes, Jermain Defoe cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s fourth-minute penalty as Sunderland looked on course for a very decent point against Pep Guardiola’s side, but it was not to be.
Plenty of supporters made the 140-mile trip from Wearside to Manchester, and manager David Moyes, also making his club debut, gave the visiting fans a thumbs-up at full-time despite the lingering disappointment over the result.
