The Black Cats are not expected to make an appointment until their takeover is officially ratified by the Football League.
But Sunderland fans are hoping that Clough is one of the names in mind at the Stadium of Light.
Clough has performed a remarkable job at Burton Albion, and guided them from League One into the Championship.
Clough has had a minimal budget, but Burton look set to finish comfortable above Sunderland this season.
The Brewers’ safety is not confirmed, but Sunderland are hopeful that they could attract Clough, even if his current side stay in the second tier.
The current favourite for the Sunderland job is Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder.
