Sunderland will be looking to bounce back from the first defeat of the season last weekend against Burton Albion by earning all three points at home to Rochdale on Saturday – and fans want Aiden McGeady to start.

The Black Cats suffered a 2-1 loss to Burton, who were also relegated from the Championship last season as Jack Ross’ side failed to prevent Nigel Clough’s side from earning a 2-0 lead at the break.

McGeady, 32, came off the bench in the second half and provided an assist for Chris Maguire’s goal, in what was the 93-time Ireland international’s first appearance of the season.

The former Celtic, Everton and Spartak Moscow star has not been included in the previous seven matchday squads under Ross as he continues to build up his fitness. But after 39 minutes of action on Saturday, he could well be ready to start.

Ross will be looking to tighten up his defence in training after keeping just one clean sheet in eight Championship matches, but out wide he could start McGeady.

Certainly, fans want their Scottish manager to start McGeady who is known for his ability on the ball and eye for goal. Indeed, he has had a hand in 13 goals during his 38 outings for Sunderland.
