The Sunderland attacker and Stadium of Light academy graduate did not do well in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy clash.
A number of Sunderland fans have been commenting on Twitter about the Black Cats’ 2-1 loss to Leicester’s U21s in the EFL Trophy and Benji Kimpioka came under considerable criticism online.
The 19-year-old was given a big opportunity to impress new Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson with a starting berth in Tuesday night’s game at the Stadium of Light but he very much fluffed his lines.
Although Kimpioka showed plenty of energy and endeavour, his control was sloppy, giving the ball away several times, while his decision making and end product left a lot to be desired too.
While few players emerged from the game with considerable credit, the Swedish attacker’s performance was deemed especially lacklustre by some supporters, who made their feelings known on social media:
Sunderland began brightly enough against the young Foxes at the Stadium of Light as Chris Maguire fired in a free kick in the first half to give them a 1-0 lead.
However, the Black Cats lost their lead when George Hirst dispatched a penalty after Callum Wright had been fouled in the box and then Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fired in from the edge of the area to condemn the hosts to defeat.
Having beaten Grimsby and secured an additional point after a penalty shoot-out win over Scunthorpe following a draw, Leicester finish on eight points, while Sunderland and Scunthorpe will play each other for the second qualifying spot.
