Sunderland have published their retained list following the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, with four senior players set to leave the Stadium of Light once their contracts expire at the end of June (official club website).

Right-back Adam Matthews will be departing after making more than 50 appearances for the Black Cats since his move from Celtic for a reported £2million (BBC Sport) in 2015, with 28 appearances coming in the season just gone.

Two goalkeepers will also be leaving in the shape of Max Stryjek and Robbin Ruiter, while winger Luke Molyneux is reported to be heading to another North East club in Hartlepool United, as written in the Sunderland Echo.

Sunderland – who are gearing up for a second successive season in League One after getting to the 2018-19 playoff final – also announced that Under-23 players Max Johnstone, Connor Shields and Alex Storey will leave the Wearside club.

A number of Black Cats fans took to Twitter to give their opinions on the retained list, with Stryjek’s exit coming under some criticism:

Dylan McGeouch and Reece James are on the list of retained players and both have an option for a second year, but they are yet to commit (Sunderland Echo).
