A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the news that the Black Cats’ upcoming fixture against Fleetwood Town has been postponed due to international call-ups (official Sunderland website).

Sunderland were due to host the Cod Army at the Stadium of Light next Saturday but they announced on Wednesday that they have now received the three call-ups required to request a postponement, which the EFL has granted.

Clubs in League One and League Two can ask for their league games to be postponed if they have three players called up for international duty at either senior or Under-21 level, and the Black Cats confirmed on their website that “three or more players have now been selected by their respective nations”.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has been included in the Scotland squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia and San Marino, and according to Chronicle Live, the likelihood is that the club has been notified that at least two of Conor McLaughlin, Tom Flanagan and Will Grigg will be in the Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming games.

This has annoyed some Black Cats fans, who are all too aware of the fixture backlog last season which culminated in a glut of fixtures late on in the campaign and coincided with a loss of form which saw them finish in the playoffs, not to mention the inconvenience caused to fans regarding time off, travel and so on.

Here is some of the Sunderland fans’ reaction on social media:

Sunderland have announced that with further details will follow in due course regarding the rescheduled fixture.
